One year ago Google launched AI Mode as a limited test. This month at I/O, they reported it has crossed one billion monthly users, with queries doubling every quarter since launch. The shift from keyword search to AI search is no longer a prediction.

What Google announced at I/O 2026

Gemini 3.5 Flash is now the default model in AI Mode, worldwide. Not a staged rollout. Starting May 19, every AI Mode query globally runs through Google’s newest frontier model, purpose-built for agents and complex reasoning.

The search box got its biggest redesign in over 25 years. It expands dynamically, accepts text, images, files, videos, and open Chrome tabs as input, and offers intent suggestions that go well past autocomplete. You are not typing keywords anymore. You are describing a problem.

Follow-up questions now flow directly from AI Overviews into AI Mode. Context carries across the conversation. The old pattern of reading an AI answer, clicking a link, and reading again is now optional for a growing share of queries.

Search agents launched. Google introduced information agents: AI that runs in the background 24/7, monitors the web across blogs, news, social posts, and real-time shopping and finance data, and delivers synthesized updates. These agents can act. They book local services. They call businesses on your behalf. They scan apartment listings against your criteria while you sleep.

Search now builds custom apps on the fly. A system called Antigravity lets Search generate dashboards, trackers, and interactive tools in real time, tailored to a specific query. A user can ask for a wedding planning tracker and receive a working live tool. No website visit involved.

Personal Intelligence expanded to 200 countries, free. Search can now connect to Gmail, Google Photos, and soon Calendar, personalizing results around your actual context. No subscription required.

What this means for your site

The zero-click problem is getting harder to ignore. For a growing share of queries, users get their answer or complete their task without visiting any website. An agent can book a service appointment by calling the business directly.

That framing misses something. AI Overviews and AI Mode pull from real sources. When the AI names your business, you get visibility even without the click. That citation builds recognition at scale. The pattern emerging is named-or-invisible.

The agents story is the one most local businesses are sleeping on. Search agents that book home repair, beauty, and pet care are rolling out in the US this summer. These agents read your profile, pricing, availability, and reviews to decide who to recommend. Inconsistent details or a stale Google Business Profile means the agent skips you. The booking goes somewhere else, and you never knew you were in consideration.

Three things worth doing this month

Audit your Google Business Profile. Search agents making booking decisions this summer will treat your profile as the source of record. Hours, services, recent photos, and Q&A need to be current and specific. Treat it like a homepage.

Add schema to your service pages. FAQPage and Service schema are how you get cited in AI Overviews, not just ranked underneath them. Most local sites have a bare LocalBusiness block that leaves out knowsAbout, areaServed, and hasOfferCatalog. Those fields are direct signals to AI engines about which queries to consider you for.

Write one specific, opinionated piece about your service area. A clear take: what a fair price for your service looks like in your city right now, what bad work in your trade actually looks like, what the honest timeline is for a job your customers routinely underestimate. AI Mode surfaces authoritative voices. One specific, direct piece does more than ten thin pages.

Search is not going away. The filter is getting harder. Businesses that are structured, current, and specific will show up in AI results and get booked by agents. The gap is not large to close. It is just different work than two years ago.
